Description / Expertise
Oil painting on canvas with gilt frame, The Marriage of the Virgin Mary to Joseph. A familiar theme in Christian art. The story is found in the New Testament, it tells how Joseph was chosen from a number of suitors by a sign, the miraculous flowering of his rod. The scene of the marriage shows the high priest standing with Mary and Joseph on either side, his rod surmounted by a dove and he placing a ring on Mary's finger. Behind Mary her companions, behind Joseph the unsuccessful suitors all standing before the temple.
Other versions of the picture are by Raphael at Milan, Giotto at Padua, Niccolo di Buonaccorsi at the National Gallery and P. de Champaigne at the Wallace Collection.
This version by an unidentified artist came from an English Catholic Foundation and is believed to be a 17th century Italian work.
