Description / Expertise

A fine pair of cellestial & terretrial globes by James Ferguson (1710-1776) & improved by Gabriel Wright (d.1803/4).

Ferguson who bought most of the copper plates used by established globe manufacturer John Senex (d.1740) in 1755 also made new globes. In 1757 he handed the globe trade over to Benjamin Martin (1704-82), although the names Senex & Ferguson remained linked with the globes for commercial reasons. In 1782, Gabriel Wright, Martins assistant drew some new globes, which he still called "Ferguson's Terrestrial Globe". This globe was published by William Bardin (c.1740-98). On it Wright drew the routes of Captain Cook's three voyages, including to the left of the cartouche"Going North 1779" the route of the Discovery and the Resolution after Captain James Cook had died on Hawaii.
