Description / Expertise
The top fitted with a removable gallery with fine brass filigree depicting lion heads and crowns amongst trailing stems. The mahogany, fall-front fitted with a later writing slope, and original brass hinges. The fitted interior revealing a shelf faced with a moulded edge, above three, painted drawers with turned, painted columns interposed. The pine drawers and interior lined with the original blue and red paper. The brass lock and hasp later. The painted pine, frieze with a central, secret compartment and reeded, moulding simulating two false drawers above two working drawers with secret drawers behind. The escutcheons original, the handles replaced. The sides decorated with reeded moulding to simulate panels and one false drawer at the front with working drawers at the back. The back with two secret drawers, lined with red paper at the front. Standing on tapering legs decorated with a reeded moulding. Excellent original colour and patina. English, second half of the 18th century.
