Chesterfield (1694-1773) was a shrewd politician, noted for his fine oratory, he was an opponent of Sir Robert Walpole and an unenlightened Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. A patron of literature who offended Dr. Johnson, Chesterfield was an ardent Francophile and an intimate friend of Montesquieu.
