Provenance
This rare example has a makers label for “Edwards, Manufacturer to The King ,21 King St. Corner or Orange St.facing Bloomsbury Square” and is stamped: “Edwards, 21 King Street, Holborn” on a tongue inside. He is recorded as having worked here from 1813 and he died in 1848. He supplied members of Royalty with various cases etc between 1817 and 1827.
The lock hasp is stamped I Bramah with a crown over and 124 Piccadilly. This stamp was only used between June 1798 and 1813 when son Timothy joined the company and the name was changed to Bramah & Son.
In light of the above, we must assume that this case was made in the first year in which Edwards was recorded as working in King Street as that was also when the Lock manufacturers changed their name.
