Description / Expertise
A superb Japanese lacquer suzuribako (writing box), decorated on the exterior in iro-e togidashi with the scene of the Izumo lovers going for a cherry blossom viewing picnic. The interiors and rims are brilliantly decorated with wild chrysanthemums and bush clover (hagi) by a flowing stream in which one sees the subtle reflection of the moon, all in delicate gold togidashi, with a few gold-inlaid details. The moon itself is represented by the circular silver mizu-ire (water-dropper), and the inkstone is richly decorated in the vari-coloured Somada micro-mosaic of mother-of-pearl.
