Description / Expertise
Crane was born in Liverpool and although first apprenticed to a wood engraver he went on to be an all round artist working as a painter, decorator, designer, book illustrator and writer. His early training made him one of the most technically talented illustrators of his time and the influence of Burne-Jones and the Pre-Raphaelites resulted in original and highly influential works. He exihbited widely and was president of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society.
This set of eight engravings illustrating Shakespeare's Two Gentlemen of Verona was commissioned by the publisher J M Dent in 1894 in a limited edition of 650 copies. Crane closely supervised Duncan C Dallas who engraved this set in a newly developed technique on fine india paper which has resulted in these immaculate prints that are so close to the original pen and ink drawings.
