Description / Expertise
BRENDA CHAMBERLAIN (1912-1971)
‘Gold Ivory Light’
oil on canvas – 12 x 14 ins
signed & dated 'Chamberlain 1962' (lower centre)
Brenda Chamberlain was a Welsh artist & poet. Born in Bangor, Wales she studied art at the Royal Academy in London, but simultaneously developed an interest in poetry, which developed alongside that of Dylan Thomas & others of the 'Welsh school'.
'As a sensitive re-negotiation of the life and art of this intriguing figure, Holman's study is a great success.' (Books in Wales)
‘ . . . Chamberlain’s writings cannot, of course, be separated from her pictures . . .
Just before the Second World War, she moved in with artist John Petts & together they set up the Caseg Press at their home.
Chamberlain also produced prose works, including a novel & a memoir of life on Bardsey Island, where she lived from 1947. In 1961 she moved to the Greek island of Ydra, staying until the colonels' coup overthrew democracy in Greece. A Rope the of Vines (1965) describes her life there.
