Description / Expertise
An impressive 19th Century fiddle-back mahogany inverted breakfront partners pedestal desk, stamped ‘GILLOW’. This outstanding example of Gillow furniture was made in Lancaster and stamped on the top drawer by the numbers ‘L1342’. Theses numbers tell us the exact year the desk was made ‘1872’. The desk represents a Georgian style but offers more in the design, the hand turned ebony handles with ebony and ebonised beading to the desk are a deliberate contrast to the highly figured mahogany, the re-entry to the centre drawer is not only practical but very stylish and mirrored on the opposite side. This is a superb example of English cabinet-making from the workshops of Gillow.
