Circa 1850The Bund, Shanghai, with a regatta in progressThe Praya Grande, MacauOil on canvasEach 42.5 x 141.5 cm(163/4 x 553/4 in) The Shanghai painting (top) which is known in several versions, is apparently the earliest detailed view of the Shanghai Bund - executed between July 1849 and 1851. The Shanghai Regatta Club, seen here in action, was founded in 1848. In the second view, the peninsula of Macau is seen from the south-west; among the Chinese and western craft in the ‘Great Bay' are multi-oared boats often known as ‘fast crabs' or ‘scrambling dragons'.
