Description / Expertise
A fine English George II Cuban mahogany fold-over top bachelor chest of excellent colour, patina and of compact proportions. The figured solid mahogany, over-sailing top with rounded edge opening to provide either a clothes layout or writing surface, supported by two retractable lopers either side of the top cock beaded oak lined drawers. Below a further three graduated drawers, supported on bracket feet. The chest retains its original brassware. A piece made of finest dense & hard Cuban mahogany, very good quality and with its compact depth would sit very nicely in a shallow space where a standard
chest may look over large.
The folder-over top on this chest defined the term “bachelor chest” and was always used to describe a slim walnut or mahogany chest with this type of extending top. The term is now used more generally to describe a small chest of drawers. Both mahogany and walnut versions of this type of chest are quite rare, with some walnut versions commanding in excess of £30,000!
