History:

Notices of the death and obituary of Mr John Troughton appeared in the Preston Guardian, March 31 1849 as follows:
Deaths
“On Sunday last, March 25, at Leach Hall, Woodplumpton, John Troughton Esq., of the firm of Messts Troughton, Son and Noble, solicitors, of this town aged 77.”
Obituaries
“The Late John Troughton Esq., - this gentleman, whose death will be found recorded in our obituary, was the oldest solicitor in the town, being admitted at the Lancaster Summer Assizes, 1793. Mr Troughton served the office of mayor under the old corporation three times – in the year 1816, in 1824 and in 1829. In the second term of his mayoralty, the Corn Exchange was opened, and in the latter year his term of office was rendered memorable by the cost of the poor rate summonses being reduced from 2s. to 1s. each – a great saving to the poor-rate payers. The deceased was interred on Thursday last, at St Georges Church, the parish bells ringing a muffled peal.”

Leach Hall has since been transformed into a fine country house hotel and renamed Bartle Hall Hotel.
