A Northern Spanish Baroque Sculpture of the Head of a Saint

A Northern Spanish Baroque Sculpture of the Head of a Saint ( Spain 1600 to 1700 )

Medium
Stone
Literature:
The greatest and most original creations of Spanish Baroque sculpture are to be found in a series of altars and doors dating from the late 17th to the early 18th centuries in which architecture, decoration and sculpture are fused in a uniquely fantastic manner.
The nature of the original polychrome indicates this well sculpted head to be Spanish, and the function of the realistic colouring was to make the figure sculpture stand out from the ornate baroque altarpieces with their salomonic columns, broken pilasters, geometric panels, scrolls and profusion of cherubs heads.
