Description / Expertise
Roman consul Junius Brutus accompanied by two lictors, reverse showing eagle of Zeus on sceptre, holding wreath.
Brutus and Longinus left for Greece in 44 B.C having failed to win popular support in Rome after the assassination of Caesar. In preparation for the contest against Anthony and Octavian they collected an immense war chest from supporters of that cause, including Koson, a Geto-Dacian king who struck this remarkable issue for that purpose. Obverse representative of the historic fight against tyranny, whilst the eagle is the Roman symbol of victory, the design therefore expresses Brutus' propaganda in the civil war.
