A Pair of Elephant Tusks

A Pair of Elephant Tusks ( India c. 1860 )

Description / Expertise
AN IMPORTANT PAIR OF INDIAN ELEPHANT TUSKS

India

Circa 1860.

A monumental pair of mid – C19th Indian ceremonial elephant tusks in extraordinary
condition, the tusks mounted on a low hardwood stand, the front and sides profusely carved with open-fret scrolling foliage and flower heads, the sabre legs terminating in dragons heads, the tusks secured in the stand by acanthus carved hoof mounts.

The even quality and outstanding white tone of the ivory are indications that the tusks are undoubtedly from a well nourished and cared for animal. Ceremonial elephants at the courts of the maharajahs would typically have several dedicated herdsmen devoted
to their well being. The rarity and importance of tusks of this size and origin meant that they were highly prized above all others.

The relatively short length of the tusks combined with an impressively broad girth clearly show that the elephant was of Indian origin.

Measurements: The Tusks :- 52” (132cm) long 16” (41cm) girth
Overall including stand:- 53” (135cm) high 63” (160cm) wide 17.5” (44.5cm)
