Description / Expertise
WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PURCHASE A NUMBER OF MAHOGANY CABINETS FROM THE BRITISH MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY IN LONDON.
MADE IN MAHOGANY BY THE LEADING CABINET MAKERS OF THE TIME - GILLOW, DRUCE, AND CUBIT . THEY WERE ORIGINALLY USED TO HOUSE THE VAST COLLECTIONS OF SPECIMENS BROUGHT BACK TO ENGLAND IN THE 19C. MANY OF THE SPECIMENS WERE COLLECTED BY THE MEMBERS OF THE EXCEPTIONALLY WEALTHY ARISTOCRACE WHO, RATHER THAN DOING THE " GRAND TOUR " OF EUROPE, PREFERRED THE ADVENTURE OF EXPLORING THE AMAZONS AND AMERICAS. ON THEIR RETURN TO ENGLAND, THEY OFTEN SPONSORED THE MANUFACTURE OF THESE CABINETS TO HOLD THEIR VAST COLLECTIONS, DONATED TO THE NATION AND HOUSED AT THE BRITISH MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY.
DUE TO THE CABINETS NOT BEING SUFFICIENTLY AIRTIGHT TO PRESERVE SOME OF THE 150 YEAR OLD SPECIMENS, NEW METAL CABINETS HAVE BEEN PRODUCED TO HOLD THE ORIGINAL DRAWERS ( THUS NONE OF THE CABINETS WE OFFER HAVE ANY DRAWERS)
