This charming miniature shows us a lady of strong character wearing a very high powdered wig and low-necked purple gown with fur trim. It is set in the original locket frame with hair panel reverse.Lady Frances was the second of four daughters of Henry Howard 4th earl of Carlisle, by his second wife Isabella (daughter of William 4th Lord Byron) Their home was Castle Howard, Yorkshire. Frances married John Radcliffe of Hitchin Priory, Hertfordshire in 1768.The Radcliffes are an ancient and distinguished family from Lancashire.
