Description / Expertise
Harold Hitchcock was born in London and on the encouragement of his grandparents began painting when very young. His early imaginary, yet natural, landscapes were seen by the painter Laura Knights who described him as a child prodigy and encouraged his work. His distinctive visionary paintings of a Golden Age are clearly influenced by Claude Lorrain and Turner yet have a 20th century slant. He first exhibited in 1947 and a retrospective exhibition was held at the Royal Society of Arts in 1984.
