Description / Expertise
John Brett was greatly influenced by the work of the Pre-Raphaelites. Meeting John Inchbold, another plein air realist painter, added to Brett’s determination to paint ‘detail in nature’.

Brett first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1856. The following year he showed The Glacier of Rosenlaui (Tate Gallery), a highly detailed landscape study illustrating how the shape of the land could be governed by the movement of ice. This picture established his reputation, as well The Stonebreaker of 1858 (Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool). Brett’s work was much praised by John Ruskin, who became a great friend.

He later concentrated almost entirely on seascapes and landscapes, especially around the coast of Britain. He generally inscribed the works with location and precise date of execution – such as this coastal view in Cornwall, painted on 16th September 1880. At one time a busy fishing cove, Porthgwarra is just a few miles southeast of Land’s End, at the tip of Cornwall.
