Description / Expertise
A very good English Regency mahogany and caned bergere library chair. The curved top rail with scrolled top lip and reeded edge curving gently round in the shape of an ellipse and swoops gently downward to form arm rests. The back with inset, curved caned section, the arms supported by rectangular columns. The seat rails again form a u-shape, with bergere seating surface and removable leather covered seat swab (not shown on these pictures). The rear legs in cabriole form, the fronts with reeded tapering legs; both legs terminating in brass caps and castors.
Gillows of Lancaster were probably the most celebrated of all English furniture makers. They were established in the early 18th century, and pieces made by Gillows are very desirable and extremely sought after.
