Robert Colquhoun was born in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire and studied at the Glasgow School ofArt where he met the painter Robert MacBryde who became his life long friend and collaborator. In 1937-39 they visited France and Italy and in 1940-41 he served as an ambulance driver before being invalided out of the Army.

In 1941 Colquhoun and MacBryde moved to London where they shared a studio in Bedford Gardens. His first one-man show was held in London at the Lefevre Gallery in 1943. In 1947 they moved to Lewes, Sussex there they became involved in making lithographs and drawings for Miller's Press. Between 1949 and 1954 they lived in Dunmow, Essex and it was during this period that Colquhoun first began designing costumes and sets for the threatre. It 1953 he received the commission to design the costumes for George Devin's production of King Lear at Stratford.

In 1958 a major retrospective exhibition of Colquhoun's work was staged at the Whitechapel. He died in London four years later.
