Description / Expertise
Very attractive and eye-catching George III sterling silver lady's hair comb, surmounted by an oriental crown.
The comb is made in two parts, held together by two silver rivets. The lower part is plain silver and consists of eight teeth 2.7 inches (6.9 cm) long with an integral horizontal bar at the top. The full set of hallmarks are stamped on the bar. However, the maker's mark and the Georgian head were stamped on the other side and are hidden by the crown although the indentation of the stamps is visible. The upper part of the comb is fashioned in the shape of an oriental crown.
The crown is made of latticed silver and adorned with various types of raised decoration, including studs, in order to reflect as much light as possible and so simulate precious stones.
This comb is an extremely elegant and eye-catching hair ornament and the teeth are long enough to keep the whole well in place. Silver combs of this type appear to have been a speciality of Birmingham, where they were produced in a small quantity and in a collectable variety of forms.
