* *
Description / Expertise
AN EXCEPTIONAL PAIR OF ROYAL ITALIAN CARVED GILTWOOD CONSOLE TABLES

Piedmont

Circa 1750.

The tables having a carved frieze made up of ‘C’ scrolls, leaf carvings and volutes, centred by a shell carving, on particularly well carved male and female figural and ‘C’ scroll supports issuing from cornucopiae, the figures with one arm raised and pointing
upwards, informing the eye of the beholder, the supports joined by intertwined scrolling stretchers centred by cherubim gazing upwards and blowing on trumpets,
and having the original Breccia di Aleppo marble tops, an ancient Greek stone from the island of Chios, likely to have been brought to Italy during the time of the Roman Empire, the use of these exquisite and exceedingly rare marble tops emphasizing the
importance of the tables.

Provenance: House of Savoy, ref; Palazzo Reale, Turin

Under the direction of the Royal architects, Filippo Juvarra (1678-1736) and Benedetto Alfieri (1699-1767), the interiors of the Palazzo Reale in Turin were extensively redecorated in the French manner. Their grand conception is also reflected in the furniture, the designs of which were either conceived, or at least influenced, by the Royal architects.
This pair of Piedmontese console tables with their accentuated serpentine form, pronounced cabriole legs, scrolling frieze and rocaille motifs compare with examples in the Sala delle Cameriste and the Galleria del Daniel at the Palazzo Reale.
