Description / Expertise
A pair of George IV two-handled vase-shaped wine coolers, each cast and chased overall with lion’s masks, stag hunt, boar hunt, figures, eagles, etc., with detachable collar and liner, engraved with a presentation inscription, ‘Given by Mr. Gladstone to his son, Henry Neville, on his marriage’.
William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), educated at Eton and Oxford University, was elected to Parliament in 1832. He subsequently held junior positions in Peel’s governments of 1834-5 and in 1843 entered Peel’s conservative cabinet. He joined the Liberal party in 1859 and became leader of the party in 1867. A year later he was elected as Prime Minister, a position he held no less than four times (1868-74, 1880-85, 1886, and 1892-4). Gladstone was a famous proponent and campaigner on home rule for Ireland, a cause which he devoted his time to throughout his career. He resigned as Prime Minister for the last time in 1894 and died of cancer in 19 May 1898.
