Literature:
Dogs have been selectively bred for hunting for over 5000 years. However, few breeds are now kept entirely for sport or for the finding of prey for food, some may have an occasional day of it, but the great majority have become companions or pets.
Man’s association with the dog is of a very long duration, almost certainly predating the Neolithic period. Wall paintings in ancient Egyptian tombs suggest an interest in dog types and the archaeological find of wooden models of mastiff’s in the Palace of King Assurbanipal of 900 BC suggest that these dogs were bred both for their looks as well as their hunting abilities.
The Bloodhound, known in Scotland as the ‘Sleuth Hound’, is a very long established variety of British hound that is the most difficult of all varieties of hunting dog to breed.
