A BROCATELLE MARBLE LION
VENICE
Circa 1680.
The finely carved lion sitting on his haunches with raised right paw resting on a scroll sided armorial crest, the crest with an eagle with out stretched
wings, the lion with head turned, looking to the right and having a noble expression, the face and mane particularly well carved, on an oval plinth base.
The oldest known carved brocatelle marble was discovered in Pompeii.
