Born in France in the Pasde Calais region.
Information on his early life is jumbled and it is not known if he received artistic instruction.
He is almost certainly the same Charles Canada who is recorded as an Officer of Engineers in Napoleons Army. Sometime after the defeat of Napoleon, Charles immigrated to the United States where he becomes a successful Civil Engineer in New York.
It is not recorded if he continued to paint for his own enjoyment.
There are some designs known for a family memorial but no record of any other works coming on the market.
His son Charles Jnr became a successful New York financier.
This painting is of the Classical French manner of the early 19th Century drawing much form the idyllic styles of Valenciennes and Bertin.
The creation of a place you would like to be must have seemed so attractive after so many years of devastation in Europe.
There is a peace and tranquility about these paintings both in lighting and subject, which makes them such an enduringly popular genre.
