William Linton was a landscape painter who was born in Liverpool.
At the age of 16 he was placed in a merchants office, a life he was not destined to follow. He painted landscapes in the Lake District for his own pleasure and copied pictures by Richard Wilson. Eventually Linton decided to make art his profession and settled in St. John’s Wood London. He became one of the most celebrated and prolific landscape painters of his time. Many compared his work to being the new Richard Wilson and as a contemporary of J.M.W. Turner there were obvious comparisons.
He was an extensive traveller recording many parts of the Mediterranean both in paintings and engravings.
The great British art historian Colonel M.H. Grant said of Linton, “We know of few painters whose life’s work, if collected together into one Gallery, would make a more splendid appearance than this”.
He took an active part in founding the Society of British Artists Suffolk Street in 1824. Linton exhibited his work from 1824 to 1871. Also at the Royal Academy from 1817- 1859, the British Institution, Suffolk Street (101 works), Old Watercolour Society and the New Watercolour Society. Linton’s early works were the scenery of England especially the Lake District. Later in life he turned to classical landscapes and it was these pieces that made his reputation. These were views in Athens, Italy, Sicily and Calabria.
Linton was also a talented chemist in artistic materials and was considered the master on the subject.
In 1853 he published Ancient and Modern Colours, from the Earliest Periods to the Present Time, with their Chemical and Artistical Properties; and in 1857 Scenery of Greece and its Islands, illustrated by 50 engravings.
After his retirement in 1865, a sale of his works was held at Christies on 28 April 1865.
