Description / Expertise Scene in Surrey & The Coming Storm - two atmospheric country scenes by Walter Williams; a member of the famous Williams family of painters, he was the only son of George Augustus Williams. Under the auspices of his father and grandfather Edward Williams he developed his palette and technique in the tradition of the famous Williams family. His first works were accepted for exhibition when he was 18, both at the British Institution and the Royal Society of British Artists, the year 1854 saw his first work hung at the Royal Academy where he continued to exhibit regularly for the next 30 years. Walter was particularly fond of painting country landscapes depicting seasonal activities of rural life, often at sunrise or sunset, he was particularly keen on portraying the effect of light on a scene. His work was popular with the Victorian public and he maintained a steady income from it. The quality of Scene in Surrey & The Coming Storm like all of his paintings is very high and this allied to there marvellous decorative appeal, makes these works very collectable.
