Born in Paris in 1827 he became an apprentice at the
L’ Ecole des Beaux Art there where he received his early training.
This led to becoming a pupil of the great Theodore Rousseau. He became a true exponent of the Barbizon School of landscape painters and the influence of Rousseau remained with him.
He travelled to Italy where he stayed for some while then traveling through Germany following the great rivers.
He was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon from 1850 until his death.
In his later years he went back to live in Fontainebleau where he continued to paint the silent forest, which had been such an inspiration to him.
