F.D. Hardy was born in 1826, son of a musician and brother of George Hardy 1822 - 1909. He became a painter of genre scenes, especially interiors featuring children. He studied under Thomas Webster and had a studio at Webster’s house in Cranbrook where he lived from 1854 -1875.
Hardy exhibited works at the Royal Academy from 1851-1898 and at the British Institute from 1851 - 1856. Hardy was a member of the Cranbrook Colony in Kent along with Webster, A.E. Mulready, G.B O’Neill and J.C. Horsley.
F.D. Hardy died at Cranbrook in 1911.
