JOHN ANSTER FITZGERALD
1832 – 1906 Signed
Oil on canvas 30 ¼ x 25 inches

John Anster Fitzgerald was a painter of fairy scenes and dreams, which included sleeping people surrounded by goblins – all highly imaginative works. He painted in oil and watercolour.
Very little is known about his life and only very few paintings exist. He is known to have belonged to the Maddox Street Sketching Club and he exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1845 to 1902, the last title being ‘Alice in Wonderland’ in 1902.
Fitzgerald also exhibited 8 paintings at the Royal Society of Artists Birmingham, 11 at Dudley Gallery & New Dudley Gallery, 24 at the Walker Gallery Liverpool, 18 at the Royal Society of British Artists, 6 at the Royal Hibernian Academy, 20 at The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and 10 at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

His work can be seen at the Guildhall, London and the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool.
