Description / Expertise
A superb pair of English Regency carved mahogany shell back hall chairs attributed to Gillows of Lancaster, retaining excellent original colour and patina. The shell backs with a crisply carved radiating fan creating the effect of a shell, with scrolling sides to the uprights and a central painted shield monogram incorporating the letter “m”. The well figured seat with moulded edge supported at the front by classic Gillows reeded tapering front and sabre legs to the rear. These chairs are of excellent colour and wonderful quality throughout.
Gillows of Lancaster were probably the most celebrated of all English furniture makers. They were established in the early 18th century, and pieces made by Gillows are very desirable and extremely sought after. A pair chairs of an almost identical model, stamped by Gillows, is in the Abbot Hall Museum and Art Gallery, Kendal, illustrated in Mary Burkett, A History of Gillows of Lancaster, 1969, pl. 14. A related set of chairs see were sold in Sothebys, Fine English Furniture Sale, 28th September 2001.
