Description / Expertise A Misty Highland Morning is an atmospheric and alluring study of highland cattle near a small Scottish loch, in an early morning scene with the cloud rolling over the hills, an excellent work by renowned animal and landscape painter Louis Bosworth Hurt.
Born in Ashbourne, Derbyshire Hurt became famous for his paintings of the Scottish Highlands and his portrayal of Highland cattle. Some of Hurt's early training was as the pupil of another well-known Derbyshire artist, George Turner. Much of his work was done at his home in Ivonbrook, where he kept his own herd of Highland cattle, although he made frequent visits to Scotland. Hurt sought for and achieved purity of form in the more broken and undulating highland landscape. His is an important and distinguished interpretation, which he occasionally exaggerates, perhaps, but by means of which he succeeds in rendering a few timeless moments of nature. Louis exhibited in London at the Royal Academy from 1881 and the Royal Society of British Artists, his works can be found in many museums throughout the world including in Reading, Glasgow, Russell-Cotes Art Gallery, Bournemouth, USA, Canada, Australia and Brazil.
