Description / Expertise
A beautifully painted, light, airy and appealing village scene of Pryford in Surrey by leading 19th century landscape painter Frederick William Hulme.
Born on 22 October 1816 in Swinton, Yorkshire, Frederick was taught to paint by his mother. He later went to live in Hanley in Staffs, and had his first exhibited paintings shown at the Birmingham Academy in 1841. In 1844 he came to London and worked for a time as an illustrator and engraver, contributing work to the "Illustrated London News" and "The Book of South Wales", as well as for books of Rhymes and Poetry. In 1846 Hulme began showing his works at the major London showrooms, including the Royal Academy, where he was to have 40 pictures shown up to his death in 1884. He also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, the British Institution and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and elsewhere at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists.
The majority of Hulme's works were painted in Wales and Surrey, and were of idyllic landscape with rustic figures and animals. His style is clear and fresh, reminiscent of the famous Thomas Creswick.
