Description / Expertise Old Cottages, Bigbury is a classical Victorian country scene of Devon with charm, good use of light and classical elegance by midlands artist William Pitt. Concentrating on capturing quiet river, country and coastal scenes throughout Britain, particularly in Devon & Cornwall and Pitt often also ventured across the channel to the low countries. William moved to London in 1862, to be close to the thriving art market in the capital, but most of his summers were spent in the west country of England.
Pitt's style is crisp and fresh, showing a keen eye for the details of the village and countryside, with accurate representation of the local folk going about their daily activities. He was particularly noted for his gift of combining the abilities of landscape and figurative painter, with mills, cottages, churches and castles included within his compositions.
William Pitt exhibited extensively, over 70 of his works being accepted at the major London galleries, including at the Royal Academy, British Institution and Royal Institute. He was most popular however at the Royal Society of British Artists, where 55 of his paintings were shown over the period 1853 to 1890. He was also a prolific exhibitor at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and at the Manchester City Art Gallery. His works can also be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
