Description / Expertise
Romano-British Pelta Brooch with Celticised Motif.

2nd Century A.D

Pelta shaped plate with central vertical strip of alternative red and yellow enamels in individual cells. The perimeter constitutes motif of triangular cells, with extensive traces of original coloured pigments remaining. Interior panel is a celtic design which appears to be an adaptation of the cable motif with circular cells filled with orange enamel in the field. Four plain side lugs.

Not a common example, only four other examples known, with similar characteristics to this piece.
