Description / Expertise
c. 1st -2nd Century A.D
The naked youth Mercury facing, body aligning slightly right. Left leg bent at knee bearing weight, right leg lengthened raising hip and buttock. Anatomical detail of the torso flows in naturalistic accordance with the alignment of the body, illustrating high level of sophistication; chlamys with luxurious folds draped over left shoulder and arm, money purse in left hand (Mercury, not only messenger to the gods but also god of business and commerce). Svelte facial features, wide eyes beneath arched brow, lips slightly parted, crowned by winged petasos.
A superb piece exhibiting a high degree of sophistication, with a lovely dark patina remaining, varying from dull to glossy.
