Description / Expertise
Born near Sychrov in northern Bohemia, Knüpfer studied at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts and under Piloty in Munich. “His greatest success was achieved in the 1880s and 1890s as an official painter of the sea and mythological beings (e.g. Duel of the Tritons, c. 1885-90; untraced, see Kotalíková, 1984 exh. cat.). The effect he aimed to achieve was a contrast between imaginary mythologies and the plein-air depiction of natural movement and light. Some of his paintings demonstrate a development from salon painting to fin-de-siècle art, including an element of eroticism…” (Turner, p.171)
