JONATHAN LOWNDES (1680-1710)
Walnut Longcase Clock ( England c. 1700 )

Dimensions
  102.00inch high (  259.08 cm high)
Description / Expertise
An important Queen Anne burr walnut longcase clock of month duration by this well known clockmaker.

The exceptional burr walnut case is veneered onto oak in the usual manner and retains its original gilt trusses. There is a single plinth to the base and the original caddy top is mounted with three original giltwood finials set on blocks above an intricately cut sound fret. The hood door is flanked by turned walnut columns with gilt wooden capitals.

The very original substantial month duration movement has six finned pillars and its original anchor escapement and there is outside countwheel strike on a bell. The clock is complete with its brass pendulum and extra large brass cased month duration weights.

The clock dial has a finely matted centre, inset datework and subsidiary seconds dial. The maker's signature is set on the chapter ring between VII and V and the hands are of finely wrought blued steel. The four original spandrels show cherubs upholding the royal crown and sceptre.
