Description / Expertise
Joan Gale Thomas was born in 1910 in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire and studied at the Chelsea Illustrators Studio. After illustrating books for other authors she published her own first book A Stands for Angel in 1939. This was followed by many other children’s books, many with a religious theme. In 1941 she married the author and illustrator Richard Robinson and thereafter worked as Joan Gale Robinson (although on occasions after her marriage she did sign herself by her maiden name). Some of her most famous books were about the adventures of Teddy Robinson. Her archives are lodged with the de Grummond Collection at the McCain Library & Archives, University of Southern Mississippi.
