Excellent. The painting has been lightly cleaned. Old re-lining. New English made swept gilt wood & gesso frame.
Description / Expertise Flushing them out - is a study of two working spaniels with the backdrop of a moorland scene. With a descriptive field sports style and eager dogs, this painting is bears all the attributes of a work by well known 19th century animal and sporting painter Martin Theodore Ward.
Martin was born in 1799 the son of William Ward the engraver and nephew of James Ward the artist. He studied under Sir Edwin Landseer where his work certainly shows the influence of his famous tutor and on some of his more ambitious paintings that of his uncle James is also noticeably in evidence. Martin exhibited at the Royal Academy during his early years, from approximately 1820-25, yet despite being an excellent sporting artist, he never found the notoriety of other Landseer students like George Armfield, to which his work bears a remarkable similarity. He died in poverty in York in 1874.
