CLAUDE LALANNE

Biography

Lalanne, born in Paris in 1924 studied architecture and also attended the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs. She became part of an intimate community at the Impasse Ronsin, Montparnasse, Paris which included Brancusi, Max Ernst, Jean Tinguely and American artists Larry Rivers and Jimmy Metcalf from whom she learnt the art of electro-plating which became a signature of her work. Following on from Renaissance artists she re-discovered the art of casting natural forms directly from life and through the years produced a body of work incorporating these elements, often juxtaposed with the unexpected as with Caroline Enceinte at the Pompidou Centre in Paris.
