FREDERICK GEORGE COTMAN

Biography

The son of Henry Cotman and nephew of John Sell Cotman, he was born and educated in Ipswich and entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1868 where he won a gold medal for historical painting. His early watercolours were purchased by both Leighton and Watts, and in 1876 he was employed by Leighton to assist in painting The Daphnephoria. He first started his independent career as a portrait painter but later painted both landscape and genre subjects. . He exhibited at the Royal Academy and elsewhere from 1871 and held one man exhibitions at the Fine Art Society and Dowdeswell Galleries, London. Works by him are in the collection of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Ipswich Town Hall, Castle Museum, Norwich, Ashmolean Museum Oxford and Oldham Art Gallery.
