The Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) is a non-profit membership organisation of the nation's leading galleries in the fine arts. Founded in 1962, ADAA seeks to promote the highest standards of connoisseurship, scholarship and ethical practice within the profession. ADAA members deal primarily in paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings and photographs from the Renaissance to the present day. Each ADAA member is an experienced and knowledgeable specialist dealer. ADAA has 164 member galleries in more than 25 US cities.
Membership in ADAA is highly selective. New members are chosen by invitation of the Board of Directors after consultation with the entire membership. To be considered for membership, an art dealer must have been in the business for five years and must:
Have a reputation for honesty and integrity in relations with the public, museums, artists and other dealers
Have expert knowledge of the works of the artists or periods in which he or she specialises
Make a substantial contribution to the cultural life of the community by offering works of high aesthetic quality, presenting worthwhile exhibitions, or publishing scholarly catalogues or other documentary materials.
Among ADAA’s numerous national and international activities are:
ADAA produces The Art Show, which is recognized for the high level of quality of works offered
ADAA’s Appraisal Service offers the nation’s most professional and authoritative valuations of works of art for tax purposes
ADAA cooperates with museums, scholars and artists on issues of mutual concern
ADAA advises members, other organisations and government bodies on matters concerning the visual arts, including legislation on prints, sculpture and moral rights
ADAA assists the FBI and other law enforcement agencies on issues involving stolen works of art, questions of authenticity and in identifying fake works and attempting to remove them from the market.
ADAA encourages support for the National Endowment for the Arts and other arts advocacy initiatives
ADAA speaks out on behalf of ADAA members and the art community on such public policy issues as pending legislation, legal matters and international trade
