A & J Speelman Ltd Oriental Art
36A Kensington Square, London, W8 5HP
A & J Speelman has been established at 129 Mount Street in Mayfair, London since 1976, and as a family antiques business stretching back three generations to 19th-century Holland. The Speelman brothers, grandfather and great uncle of the present proprietor Jules Speelman, extended into England around the turn of the century, trading in a range of antiques from premises at 180 Wardour Street, London W1. Jules Speelman’s father Alfred followed in their footsteps, and eventually established a gallery in Kensington Church Street, where he was joined by his son in 1964, at which point a gradual focus towards Asia began. The gallery now specialises in Asian antiques, with a particular emphasis on sculpture and works of art from the past 2,000 years. The scope is eclectic and diverse, with a concentration on rarity and quality. The collections are particularly strong in Chinese works of art, as well as Chinese decorative arts covering cloisonné and Canton enamels, lacquer, ivories, soap stones, hard stones, carvings in wood, bamboo, porcelain, pottery and Chinese export ceramics and works of art. A speciality of the firm is figurative sculpture, from the terracotta tomb figurines of the Han and Tang dynasties of the first millennia AD, to bronzes depicting figures from the Buddhist and Taoist pantheon, both gilt and ungilt, in stone, wood and stucco, of small collectible size to the large and important. Himalayan bronzes from Tibet and Nepal are particularly well represented. The great glory and primary artistic legacy to world art from India and South East Asia is their sculptural tradition in stone and bronze. The gallery carries an important representative group in these areas, primarily from the Pala and Chola dynasties of India, and Pre Khmer and Khmer works from Cambodia, with further examples covering Central India, Kashmir and Thailand.

Abbott and Holder Ltd
30 Museum Street, London, London, WC1A 1LH, England
Abbott and Holder’s founders Robert Abbott and Eric Holder first began dealing in partnership in 1936 and for over seventy years it has been the gallery’s policy to stock pictures that are within the means of as broad a section of the population as possible. While much of their stock is priced between £100 and £5000 a £50 and under box is still kept, which is a direct descendant of the five shilling box from the 1950s. After the Second World War Robert Abbott’s house in Barnes was used as the gallery for the rapidly increasing stock and it was at this time that Abbott and Holder’s seven-weekly Lists were first launched as a means of introducing and publicising new acquisitions. The house became popular with enthusiasts and customers were encouraged to take their time over decisions and to make as many visits as they needed to get to know the staff and the stock, the same is true of the gallery today which is now located on Museum Street opposite the British Museum. The partnership remained a family matter when the founder’s nephew, John Abbott, joined Eric Holder from 1971 to 1981. In 1984 Philip Athill became a partner having worked as an, assistant at the gallery after read reading art history at the University of East Anglia. On the retirement of John Abbott in 2001 Abbott and Holder became a limited company and Philip Athill is now the gallery’s Managing Director. Today over 1,000 pictures are on view at the gallery, all marked and priced and while it is necessary to ring the door bell, once admitted and the layout briefly explained, visitors are left to explore at will and the staff are on hand to answer any questions.
