Alan Safani is a third-generation art dealer belonging to a multi-generational family business
that has been offering museum quality works of ancient art for over 100 years.
Starting in the 1890’s with Dr. Benjamin Mahboubian, a noted archaeologist and expert of
Persian art, the family business has included relatives who were prominent dealers in Islamic
and Ancient art in Teheran, Paris, London, and New York. Edward Safani, Dr.
Mahboubian’s son-in-law, came to the United States in 1946. He quickly became a noted
authority on Islamic art, ancient glass, and ancient Near East art.
Alan Safani, son of Edward and grandson of Dr. Mahboubian, continues this legacy. His
fascination with ancient art started in childhood while visiting his father’s gallery and
continued as Alan decided to become an art historian. While attending the Institute of Fine
Arts in New York Alan studied ancient, modern, and Islamic art, art law and art
conservation. After graduate school, Alan decided to enter the family business where he
launched his father’s gallery into the world of international art fairs, exhibiting at all the
major vetted fairs including the Winter Antiques Show, Tefaf Maastricht, Tefaf New York,
Frieze Masters, Masterpiece and Brafa until the gallery closed.
Alan Safani has now entered a new and exciting phase of his career, offering clients
unparalleled experience and advice on purchasing museum level works of art in all
categories. Born into the trade, educated as an art historian, and involved in over seventy-
five international art fairs, Alan has become an expert in every skill that is required to assist
collectors in acquisitions of major art works – connoisseurship, authentication, provenance
research, transport, lighting, presentation, research, and preservation. His network of art
professionals is worldwide and consists of a select group of experienced and knowledgeable
experts who have worked with Alan in the past.
The art world is a complex and complicated environment. Navigating through it requires a
high level of proficiency with a multiplicity of skill sets. It requires experience, knowledge,
and integrity.
