Charles Ede Ltd
Charles Ede is one of the leading galleries in the field of ancient art, specialising in Classical and pre-Classical antiquities from Greece, Egypt, Italy, Cyprus and the Near East. The business is run by Chairman James Ede whose father, Charles, first established it in 1971 and by Managing Director Martin Clist. In 2014 the gallery moved to new, larger premises located in Three Kings’ Yard, just off Davies Street in the heart of London’s Mayfair.
The gallery exhibits a wide range of high-quality antiquities, from finely crafted jewellery to armour and marble sculpture. Bronze sculpture, glassware, oil lamps and writing equipment also feature, along with a wide range of Greek pottery vessels, whose elegant shapes and extraordinary painted scenes give fascinating insights into ancient culture, history, the myths, stories and legends of the gods and heroes, as well as glimpses of domestic life in the ancient world. Each piece is thoroughly researched with an emphasis on provenance and academic knowledge, creativity and the legacy of its founder. The gallery also produces a number of catalogues covering a broad range of cultures.
Clients include major private collectors from around the world as well as museums in Europe, the USA, Switzerland and Australia, including the British Museum, the Ashmolean in Oxford, the Fitzwilliam in Cambridge, The Metropolitan, New York, Cleveland, Houston, San Antonio; Brussels, Basel, Hildesheim, Munich and Basel.
